So many parents are intimidated by having to teach math to their children. I admit math is not my strong suit, and I've got two kids in Algebra, so reviewing Math Refresher for Adults from Math Essentials seemed like a great way for me to brush up on some math skills.
To be fair, my kids do pretty well with math once they understand what they are doing. But if they don't, it's frustration for everyone until they do understand. Especially my son. He's going into 8th grade and sometimes rushes through the teaching portion of a lesson, assuming he knows what he's doing, only to discover he's gotten everything wrong. Then he has to sit and wait while I read the lesson, figure out what I'm doing, and then teach him. It would be nice if I could remember what to do and help him the first time through!

Understanding Pre-Algebra Review
We have used books from The Critical Thinking Co.™ in the past. We like their products and the way they teach. When we were offered the opportunity to review Understanding Pre-Algebra, I decided it would be a great way for my son to hone his math skills.

Sometimes we feel like we need a change of pace. When we were offered a six month subscription to Reading Eggs, I thought that sounded like a fun change for my two youngest daughters. Looking over the Reading Eggs website, I realized that it can be used for more than beginning reading skills!

A Review of K5 Learning
Sometimes kids need something new and fun to do for school, whether that's because of summer break, falling behind, or needing to supplement. K5 Learning came at a perfect time for us, my 3rd grader got to use their online program because she had finished her math book a month before school was out for summer!

How We Homeschool: Math (Blogging Through the Alphabet)
There are so many math programs available for homeschoolers! When we started teaching our kids at home, we struggled with what math program to use. So many seemed like they would work well. I started looking at various programs, trying anything I could get my hands on, and reading reviews and books/websites that explained them.
We finally settled on Saxon. The spiral method works well for my children (they did not do well with the mastery program they used at school). There is SO MUCH hands on work for the younger grades, and we've found ways to carry that over into the older grades when the kids need it. I read many things that helped me understand how thorough Saxon is. Every time one of my kids struggles with math, I switch up how we work and learn so they can get past the difficult part. I finally quit researching other methods because whenever I did I was reminded how great Saxon is, and that nothing else was going to work as well for my kids. If someone was truly struggling with Saxon's methods we would switch for that child, but usually the trouble we experience is because we need to refocus or examine how we're using our time.

Math Mammoth Blue Series Review
We have been reviewing Math Mammoth worktexts from the Blue Series this past month. To be honest, I have overlooked Math Mammoth in the past because I didn't think we needed more math. But after doing a little research I realized that the Blue Series is exactly what my family needs. While we were trying to decide which books to choose for our review, my children started getting excited about Math Mammoth too!
Though it was hard to narrow down our choices (there are so many that I like!), we finally decided on:

LearnBop Review: A Math Tutor in your Home!
We like to continue working on math over the summer so a review opportunity for LearnBop for Families came at just the right time! Don't be fooled though, LearnBop is a great way to support math during school as well. It's like having a math tutor in the home! LearnBop has been available to schools for some time, but LearnBop for Families is a new program.

Week 13: 52 Weeks of Photos
Last week my 2nd grader did the best lesson in the Saxon math books... Saxon 3 Lesson 66. AKA the brownie lesson. My kids love this lesson and they get their own card with the brownie recipe. They already know how to follow a recipe, and how to make brownies, but it's really exciting to make brownies as your math lesson!
