2017 Homeschool Review Crew Blue Ribbon Awards

At the end of every year the Homeschool Review Crew wraps up the year with a favorites survey. Each crew member and their families discuss which review items they liked the most in various categories.

We were excited to see some of our favorites made the final list! Here's the links to our reviews that ended up being crew favorites too.

One review item that we loved that didn't make the final list is Bessie's Pillow. What a great book!

Check out the final list for the 2017 Blue Ribbon Awards at the link below!

Homeschool Rescue Review

Homeschool... it can be so rewarding and it can be so frustrating! We have great days, and we have bad days. Sometimes the frustrating days come when you first start to homeschool, and sometimes they come after you've been doing it for a while. Don't let those days get you down, or take over your life! Homeschool Rescue from Only Passionate Curiosity is here to help you get back on track.

I'll admit that we're struggling right now. Perhaps it's the "summer is in sight" jitters, or perhaps it's the "we've been doing this for four years now" blues. Whatever is causing it, I need a reset so I don't feel like yelling every day, and my kids need a little more focus and diligence. This review came at the right time!

The Secret Bridge, A Book Review

It's hard to catch someone without a book in their hand around here. My daughter and I had the opportunity to review The Secret Bridge from Lamplighter Publishing recently. What a great book! Lamplighter Publishing says they aim to develop "Christlike character one story at a time." I understand what they mean after reading this book.

Daily Bible Jigsaw Review

I have four kids, and while they don't have their own devices, they love using our shared devices and playing games on them. We have enjoyed reviewing Daily Bible Jigsaw, a family friendly game from Planet 316. (I have distorted the names and pictures of my personal screen shots in this review to maintain the privacy of my Facebook friends.)

Daily Bible Jigsaw by Planet 316

This game is free! Though the Google Play Store says the game contains ads, I haven't seen a single one in the game. The only advertisements I found are in the get more coins area. You can buy coins or you can watch video ads to earn coins. I appreciate Planet 316 keeping this game safer for my kids by not using ads they could accidentally click on or view while playing.

A Review of "Bessie's Pillow, A Young Immigrant's Journey"

Can you imagine being 18 years old and immigrating to a new country, alone? That's exactly what happened to Bessie Markman in the book Bessie's Pillow. Her granddaughter, Linda Silbert, is the author and owner (with her husband) of Strong Learning, Inc., a tutoring and publishing company in New York. Dr. Linda wrote this book after listening to recorded interviews between Bessie and her daughter Ann Bress (Linda's mother). She was generous enough to send us and other Homeschool Review Crew members a copy of her book to read and review.

Circle C Stepping Stones Books: A Review

My daughter was excited to review two chapter books that are right at her reading level, and have stories about horses! These books are the latest written by Susan K. Marlow, from Kregel Publications.

We received Andi Saddles Up and Andi Under the Big Top. These paperback books are just right for ages 7-10. They are the first two books in the Circle C Stepping Stones series, which is part of a larger series of leveled stories. You can follow Andi as she grows up if you start at the beginning. What a great way to encourage children to read.

The Beginner's Bible Review

Family and personal scripture study is very important to my family, even my youngest reads her scriptures every night. It's adorable, since she was three she sits with her scriptures and recites memorized ones or underlines everything in her own copies. She often uses our children's versions of scripture stories because they have pictures. When Zonderkidz asked crew members to review their updated book, The Beginner's Bible, I thought this might be another good bible for my youngest to use. If you are looking for a bible for your children to start reading this year, this is one you may want to consider!

2016 Blue Ribbon Awards and Our Family Favorites

2016 Homeschool Review Crew Blue Ribbon AwardsAt the end of each year, the Homeschool Review Crew sends out a survey for crew members to vote on their favorite products from that year in a variety of categories. It's fun to see what everyone on the crew enjoyed, and I discovered it's helpful to sit with my children and discuss what we felt was most helpful in our home and fun to use. You can see the survey results here.

A Review of Sentence Diagramming: Beginning

Language Arts {The Critical Thinking Co.™}A few years ago, when we first began homeschooling, we used a grammar program that had tidbits of everything thrown into one book, including confusing my kids to the point that we all hated grammar.  Though I could see that diagramming would be beneficial, I didn't know how to help the kids understand it.  When The Critical Thinking Co.™ asked members of the Homeschool Review Crew to review some of their products, I wanted to try their new book, Sentence Diagramming: Beginning.  I hoped that this would help us understand diagramming better than we have in the past!
