Weekly Recap: With Come, Follow Me 2019

Oops. I wrote this in early January, and forgot to publish it. Here it is a couple of weeks late!

My kids are awesome! For months and months I've been talking about moving bedrooms so that M's room would also be her exercise room. It was her exercise room and the playroom. But there were so many toys in there that I haven't wanted to start. M asked if she could start! I said yes and she proceeded to motivate her siblings to help. It took them about a week, and they did such a great job! Their rooms are organized, M doesn't have to worry about anyone leaving a mess in her exercise area, and everyone loves the new arrangements. The best part is that I only had to give final approval and help move bed frames.

We celebrated on New Year's Eve with our traditional pigs in a blanked made with Little Smokies. We also had spinach artichoke dip with celery and cucumbers. The kids watched three movies, some fell asleep early (like me), and the three girls slept in the living room (a tradition.) J opted to sleep in his own bedroom since he doesn't share with anyone anymore!

Dad finally changed the light switch in the hall downstairs so it doesn't keep burning out light bulbs. It has a dimmer now, which is much nicer when used as a night light.

School highlights:

We only had two days of school this week. For geography we looked over our country reports to make sure we are caught up. We discovered the lessons skipped over the first section of the reports, so we'll do that next week. M is finishing up the final project for her graphic design course, and J is finishing up his coding course. He has been learning a little about 3D printing over the Christmas break.

Weekly Recap: With Thanksgiving and Christmas

Happy New Year! I need to catch up on the end of the previous year, so here we go!

Daddy got new tires on his van, thanks to Black Friday sales they were a great price! We enjoyed Thanksgiving and Christmas and spending time with family. Both my husband and M have spoken in sacrament meeting during the past month. I put together some Christmas stories into a Christmas program outline for our church, and each group created a skit for their story. J was the ghost of Christmas present, M was the child who gets on the Polar Express, and I was Santa in 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. New Year's Eve was a fun night as well, with spinach artichoke dip and vegetables, and pigs in a blanket made from Little Smokies. We watched National Treasure and Snowball Express, and some kids stayed up late enough to also watch Groundhog Day with Dad.

Each year my brother and sister buy my family tickets to an experience of some sort - the zoo, aquarium, etc. Last year they gave us cash and instructions to choose. We had a dinner and play picked out, then something came up and we weren't able to go. When The Forgotten Carols tickets went on sale, I bought seats right away and we surprised the kids! Everyone had a great time, but it started so late.. we didn't get home until 11 p.m. That was rough, but the play was memorable.

Weekly Recap: With the scan and the crabs

Whew, when do we get to slow down for a minute?

J has been doing service projects almost every day this week. He and the other boys his age at church planned this to help ward members. He's been such a good example!

E got a fixed retainer put in her lower jaw to help hold things as the rest of the baby teeth fall out, before she can get braces.

M was scanned for a new brace. She'll be getting it in a few weeks. It was really neat to see how a 3D scan is done.

Weekly Recap: With the scoliosis check-up

Well, fishing club has ended, and the other two kids caught their fish on the last day. It was a fun experience and the kids learned a lot. If you ever have the opportunity to join your city's local youth fishing club, we recommend it!

Weekly Recap: with the 3rd grade math

I've been trying to stay caught up here, but always, always... it's two weeks later when I'm sure it's only been 4 days since I last posted!

History: Continuing to learn about WWI. We learned about the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which started the war. We also learned about the Russian Revolution.

Literature: The two youngest are still learning about fairy tales and many literary elements found in them.

Weekly Recap: With the tools with names

I've been forgetting to mention what our Family School and other highlights have been! I'm going to try to keep better track of that now. Over the past couple of weeks we've had some great lessons.

History: An intro to the last days - this was a great lesson and as soon as it was finished one child said, "Can we do that lesson again?!" Also a lesson on the four causes of World War I. Another good lesson. This year of history is looking great!

Literature: E & N have been learning about fairy tales and studying literary elements included in them. It's been a huge change to teach just the youngest two instead of everyone, but it's also fun to spend time with just them.
J has been doing some career placement quizzes and working on Code for Teens. M has been working on a beginners commercial art course.

Weekly Recap: With the breakfast foods

Last time I updated you, I mentioned an exciting event coming up from Family School. Well, that happened and it was pretty awesome! They introduced the new Lifetime Membership pricing, the new Preschool lessons, and the Open & Go lessons! That is what has kept me so busy lately, I am on the team that is condensing the lessons and making them easier for you to use. It's been such a neat project to participate in and I'm so excited to see them go live for you to use!

M has been busy in the kitchen lately. We found brown spot bananas discounted at the store and she wanted to make banana bread muffins. I believe she said she did 12 batches by the time she was done, something like 150 muffins? Then she decided to make breakfast burritos, and ended up with just over three dozen of those! It has been so nice to have these options in the freezer for breakfasts. A few days later she also made overnight oatmeal, one dozen half pint jars.

Weekly Recap: With all the stuff in the busy summer

Well, this weekly recap is nearly a monthly recap! I really hoped that life would slow down in the summer so we could kick back, read, play, splash, and chill a little. Ha ha! My daughter was looking at the June and July calendar the other day. "Mom, we only had 4 days with nothing to do in June. Woah... July only has 2 and it's not even done yet!"

Weekly Recap: With the cherries and the blessings

Did you know that IEW offers free shipping from July 1-10? It's a great time to buy what you need for the next school year! Be sure to enter the drawing for a $50 gift certificate while you are there.

Here's an update through the rest of June. I've been so busy that I'm  having a hard time keeping up with everything! I'm glad that June is done. I've seen so many good things happen the past couple of weeks though, I know Heavenly Father is watching over my family.

Weekly Recap: With the busy summer

I feel like I've been sprinting since school ended! Sometimes we have two or three places to be in a day. I just want a few days that we can stay home, do chores, and play. I hope things calm down soon!

But we've been having a lot of fun still, playing with friends at parks and pools. Celebrating a birthday. Working on family history. Taking apart our broken printer. Cutting down the bushes in our front yard. (HOORAY) Visiting extended family. Repairing broken A/C parts. Making bread. Doing crafts. I started at a new job, working at home and associated with homeschool, but it is a job none the less.

Weekly Recap: With the end of school!

We are so busy here! I had hoped that we would have some time off to enjoy just playing, but that has not happened yet. Which is why this post is going to cover two weeks again!

School highlights:

During the last week of school we had some fun mini celebrations.
History: LDS convert immigration stories. We also finished up our ancestor reports and presented them to the family. It was neat to learn more about the ancestors my kids chose, and even better to see them "get to know" their great-great (great?) grandparents.
Literature: A celebration for finishing Hans Brinker. I added a paragraph and picture about this celebration here.
Science: Since we studied Anatomy and Physiology, we ended with a talent show for our celebration. Each child picked a talent and showed the family. We got to see N's improving basketball skills, M and E's artwork, and try J's cookies.
Music: We played a few games to review the composers and songs we learned about this year. The music celebration is always fun, but this year they knew them so well that we finished quickly!

Weekly Recap: With the finished fence!

I've started picking up curricula here and there for the next school year. Is that really going to begin in three more months?!

Before

We've been staying busy. We slowly finished portions of the back fence, then one day it was completely done! HOORAY!!

Weekly Recap: With two weeks!

Is it summer yet? My kids are starting to feel like it should be. Some days we do great with school and get done quickly, and some days we drag on until dinner. Now that it's warm (hot) outside we are counting down the days!

Weekly Recap: With the hermit crabs

I'm beginning to think that life will never slow down again! I feel like I've got to decide what to drop before I go crazy. And to add to that we celebrated my birthday last week.

Last week I took my son shopping for dress pants. We had to buy him 30x34 slims! They are huge in the waist (he should wear a 27 but that doesn't exist), but they are the only thing long enough for his tall legs. Then he got sick and didn't go to church anyway.

E had an orthodontist appointment and received a nice surprise.. her expander came out! That means she also got to stop wearing her headgear at night. This headgear was gently encouraging her upper jaw to grow forward and just look at how well it all worked! She has a retainer for night time now.

Weekly Recap: With the gates!

It's not fun typing with a splint on my finger! But I'm managing. I did get the stitches out 10 days after they were put in. It bled the first night and swelled up again. I was pretty scared to bend it, I don't want to split it open again and since part of the cut is on a crease in my knuckle, it still looks like it's partially open.

Weekly Recap: With the stitches

There was no school last week because we had spring break instead! That means we worked on the fence a lot. We have been putting new posts in next to where the old ones were because that's easier than digging out the deep holes full of cement. But there was one corner of our yard that we could not move the post, so we had to remove all the cement in that spot. E was determined to empty that hole, and she made A LOT of progress by digging around the cement with a crowbar and then chipping pieces of cement out. You can imagine that it was tiring work though, especially deep down to the last few inches in the hole.

So I decided to help. And by help, I got bigger tools... I added a large sledge hammer to hit the crowbar with. It was working well, until I moved my hand at the same time that I brought the sledge hammer down. I was wearing a garden glove and E quickly noticed a spot of blood forming on the glove. The pain was so intense. I ran inside and carefully took the glove off and ran cold water over my finger. When I worked up enough courage to look, I noticed an ugly tear right across the second joint of my index finger. After keeping my finger in the water until my hand felt numb, I put some blue yarrow essential oil on it and M helped me bandage it. I could tell that if I attempted to bend the finger it would bleed, but it was fine if it was straight. Because I could bend it, I wasn't as worried about it being broken. M put some gauze and Miracle Salve on it, and taped a popsicle stick to it to keep it straight. At this point I thought maybe stitches were necessary, but I wanted to avoid the cost and finish the work outside! I texted my husband and he immediately called back, saying I was going to get it looked at... no questions. I walked back outside to start working again, with my finger throbbing and held on top of my head.

My husband left work and came to take me to InstaCare. Did you know you have to check in on a computer before the people at the desk will talk to you? Not so easy to do when your finger is not working! I was stubborn and wouldn't let my husband do it for me. The x-ray technician noticed the blue spots on my finger and asked if I had used yarrow on it. Even though I knew the gash was too big for yarrow to make a difference closing it, it helped to cleanse the wound. I also had a DTaP vaccine..I felt it was logical, all things considered. The doctor was gentle and thorough as he cleaned out the wound and stitched it up. He answered all my questions... such as, "Is that a tendon or ligament that I can see in there?" I ended up with five stitches, and the gash was about 23 mm long. I received a finger brace and had to keep it wrapped because of the danger of ripping it open again if I bent the finger.

That little bone on my thumb.. it's called a sesamoid bone.

Later we went to Target to pick up my antibiotic prescription. Those antibiotics were the second worst part of the whole experience. Over the next 10 days I checked the stitches twice a day, used arnica, helichrysum, and Miracle Salve on the finger, and bentonite clay at times. I also put clay on the vax injection site, hoping to draw out some of the junk. And, I cut apart an old garden glove and used the thumb on my fat, bandaged finger with the finger cut off so I could wear it still. Then I worked on the fence more! I even moved around and fixed the paving stones by one of our gates. It looks a lot nicer now, and will look even better when I get some new grass to grow around them.

By the way, my husband went out two days later to finish taking the cement out of that hole. He said, "It was easy, it came right out!" Hmmm. You're welcome.

Other events:

I finished studying the book of Isaiah. We went to the new playground, which was SO busy because everyone was out of school. My sister came to teach my girls quilling. And I was asked to be the secretary for the women's organization in our church congregation.

Weekly Recap x2: With Easter, Conference, and the snakes

Even though it seems like it's going slow, we've made progress on the fence. Our amazing neighbor has helped so much, which we really appreciate since my husband only has two days a week that he can work on it. The neighbor and the husband figured out where and how to place new posts. We have cement along the entire length of our fence, the previous owners did it quite nicely, and may have been concerned about dogs digging under the fence? It makes it hard to replace stuff though.

We got the posts in, and since this recap is covering two weeks, there are also a lot of panels up now too. We are sealing each board before putting it up so it's nice to have kids who want to help "paint."

Weekly Recap: with the demolition!

I didn't keep track of much of what we did last week.. I must have been busy. Or forgetful! But there was one giant item... we started demolishing our fence! When we moved in over 9 years ago, it was clear that the fence needed to be replaced soon. Within the last couple of years we've had to patch a couple of spots, and our neighbors have both replaced theirs. We've been saving, paying off things, etc. but we finally felt we had enough set aside that we could put it towards a fence!

Weekly Recap: With the last level of reading!

We're stuck in this Utah weather that can't decide if it's winter or spring. It's a fun time of year with lots of rain and snow, and warm sunny days randomly sprinkled in between.

I finally started getting better... my fever went away completely! But I had lingering coughing and tired days. And my neck and head were in so much pain, so much that it was hard to lay down and relax.

The kids had regular activities all week and stayed busy, plus M and J went to the temple one afternoon. We put the trampoline up and the kids have enjoyed playing on it again.

Weekly Recap: with the snowy miracle

School Highlights:

  • Our history lesson was an introduction to slavery. We're working toward the Civil War, this lesson was eye opening for some kids. We've talked about slavery in the past, but we really talked about it this time.
  • We studied Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost. We really like this poem and it was fun to learn more about it.
  • Our science lesson was about the sense of touch.
  • For geography we talked about the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South America. It was prophesied that the church would grow there, like an acorn grows into a might oak tree. We looked at when the prophecies happened, and how church membership grew. Pretty neat! Then we worked on religion reports for our chosen countries.
  • Prokofiev was the subject of our music lesson. What a great musician!
