What is SchoolhouseTeachers.com?
This website is pretty amazing. It contains full courses, in every subject, for your homeschooler. From preschool through high school age, penmanship to drama to fitness! There are even a few courses that I've tried out, but there is also a "Just for Parents" course section. The courses are arranged by subject or by grade so it's easy to find what you want to use with your children. There are even courses that include the libraries on World Book!
In addition to the wide range of courses, there are tools and printables to help you organize your homeschool and life. They have school planners, calendars, and weekly schedule planners. Your membership even includes access to AppleCore, a website to keep track of courses and grades. SchoolhouseTeachers.com even includes monthly menus. You really can find help in every area of life at this website, it's not just for school!
Some of my children's favorite courses are: Introduction to Graphic Design, Guitar, and ASl Adventures. Some courses include information to help you add it to your child's transcript. My son is finally big enough to comfortably use my guitar so he is working his way through the Guitar course and enjoying every minute!
Of the courses we've used, only video portions are online. Many have printable resources such as lesson guides and schedules, lesson plans, and more that are printed out and followed. Some have videos in the course to access. So don't worry that your child will be stuck in front of a screen all the time when you use these courses. It's a good balance of paper and technology in my opinion!
Other neat things:
Your membership comes with access to a good portion of the video library available through RightNow Media. These include a variety of Bible studies. We haven't accessed any of those, but we have used some other videos available on SchoolhouseTeachers, like Drive Thru History.Membership also includes access to World Book! If you remember World Book Encyclopedias, this is their online version, plus MORE! I paid for a subscription to World Book Online before it was included in my SchoolhouseTeachers.com membership, so when they started including it I was so excited! Some of my favorite things in World Book (besides the encyclopedia articles) are the Citation Builder (and citation recommendation in each article), and the Timelines.
One section that I really like is the Literacy Center. It is full of resources to help your children master and enjoy reading, from preschool to 4th grade. It includes books to download as PDF files or online readers, classics, and nursery rhymes through World Book.
I am putting the McGuffey Readers and the Raggedy Ann Stories on my daughter's tablet for extra reading during her little bit of "technology time."
If your child needs a little help in a specific area, you may want to look at the Focused Learning Centers. There are many subjects available with lessons, courses, and articles to help you help your struggling child. The Everyday Games section of Math has a variety of printable games to help your child better understand whatever subject they are learning. As I was writing this, I realized the place value games may be just what one of my children needs, the one who has been struggling with new place value and rounding concepts.
There is also a Certificate Library so you can print a Certificate of Completion when your child finishes a course. What a fun way to keep track of the courses they've completed!
