Weekly Recap: The Cold Edition.. With a Radio Show

Brrrr!! It's been in the teens and twenties a few days this week so the kids don't want to play outside for very long. Since my husband is going to bed early this month I've been taking the kids to their meetings in the evenings and I am freezing! I've pulled out warm socks and hoodies to wear all day.

Last Saturday we did some grocery shopping then went to M's piano recital. My kids use Hoffman Academy and thrive on his method. But M was near the end of the available units, and was in need of more personal attention from a piano teacher. She has a great opportunity to take lessons from a friend nearby. The recital was fun, all of the children played a Christmas song or two, and at the end they performed a group piece that they had learned only the day before! You can read about it and hear the piece here. There was quite an age range of children participating, from kindergarten to middle school, and it turned out so nice!

On Sunday evening we popped popcorn and watched the First Presidency's Christmas Devotional. It's a great way to get into the Christmas spirit. You can watch it here.

On Monday our history lesson was about The Battle of Monmouth and Abigail Adam's request of "Don't forget the ladies." We learned about a handful of great women that helped during the Revolutionary War.

Tuesday was our last mythology lesson in literature and we talked about Persephone, Narcissus, Echo, Orpheus, and Eurydice. We had a great discussion about being selfish and how we can forget ourselves and go to work! That night three of my children had meetings at the same time! Usually they are on different nights but this week was crazy.

Wednesday's science lesson was about force and motion. We searched for pushes and pulls and experimented with velocity and acceleration. Even the youngest child learned a lot from this lesson! I woke up with the beginnings of a cold that morning. See, I think my body is protesting the cold. This is the second time recently that I've been sick and that's quite abnormal!

Thursday was a trip to the orthodontist and a crazy cracker search at 5 different grocery stores.  I went to three and my husband went to two. He finally found the crackers we needed. More on that in a couple of weeks. Our geography lesson was about the biomes in North America.

Friday was music and we learned about sound effects, old time radio shows, silent films, and talkies. The kids caught on to the sound effects portion of the lesson rather quickly and told me all about which part of The Cat of Bubastes and The Dragon and the Raven fit the four types of sound effects. Then they created their own little audio show of Bear Snores On. You can listen here. They had a lot of fun! I noticed they didn't use as many sound effects as they originally wanted to, but what they did turned out really good!

  1. Monday's history lesson was a good one - Abigail Adams is my favorite First Lady. How fun that the kids learned so much about force and motion, and about sound effects - and then put their new knowledge into practice! Glad you linked up to Homeschool Highlights again this week!

  2. Just popping in from the Homeschool Highlights link up. I'm also a mum of 4 (with a similar age span to yours I think) but they're older - only 1 left homeschooling. You managed to cover a lot this week.
